Tia Smith

Tia moved from Pittsburgh, PA to serve with AmeriCorps for a year. She graduated from University of Pittsburgh in 2006. During her undergrad, she worked with many organizations but is most proud of her work with Amnesty International, where she worked with a great group of students to recruit members, organize events, and raise awareness in many different areas of human rights. She was also a peer tutor at the university Writing Center. The child of a young, single mother, Tia grew up in poverty and worked hard throughout high school and college. She remembers being encouraged by after-school programs that came to her neighborhood, and she’s excited to help similar communities through her work with Horton’s Kids.
