Tuesday Evening Tutoring

Our Tuesday night tutoring program takes place from 6:30-8:00 pm every Tuesday evening in the Rayburn building on Capitol Hill. Volunteers meet the yellow buses at the corner of Independence & New Jersey Avenue at 6:30 pm to help walk the kids inside for tutoring.

Most tutors work one-on-one with the same student each week and are required to let us know in advance if they can not attend. Volunteers who can not commit to tutoring every week are assigned as "floaters", and work with children who do not have regular tutors or whose tutors are absent. We have kids in grades K-12, and many of them are working below grade level.

Each child in Horton's Kids receives a specific learning plan customized to their individual academic needs. Tutors help the kids meet their learning goals with our extensive supply of books, interactive games, and math and literacy hands-on materials.

At 8:00 pm, everyone walks the kids back to the buses and the HKids staff takes them home.

Tuesday Tutor Commitment

In order to give the children the greatest consistency which they so desperately need as well as enable the HKids staff to facilitate tutoring for so many children, we have a tutor commitment that we hope each tutor will follow:

  • Attend at least 90% of tutoring sessions, as scheduled, for one year (i.e. miss no more than 4 sessions during the year, keeping in mind we not scheduled most holidays anyway) -OR- Recruit a tutoring partner and ensure at least one of you is present for your child each week of tutoring;

  • Fill in as needed by tutoring another child on days that your child is absent;

  • E-mail or call The Director of Volunteers if you are unable to attend BY NOON the day of tutoring;

  • If you must miss a tutoring session, please notify your child by either
    (1) telling him/her at tutoring the week before
    (2) telling him/her by phone or
    (3) e-mailing a note to The Director of Volunteers which she will print and deliver to your child

  • Attend at least three tutor training sessions during the year;

  • Set-up and/or clean up tutoring supplies one or two months throughout the year, as needed;

  • Escort your child safely and quietly between the buses and the building.
