Tutoring

Horton’s Kids tutors work one-on-one with children to help them improve their academic performance. Currently, Horton’s Kids provides three nights of tutoring for the children. Most volunteers chose the one day of the week that fits their schedule best, but tutors may also choose to tutor on multiple nights – the choice is yours!

    • Mondays: 6:30-8pm in the House Office Buildings on Capitol Hill
    • Tuesdays: 6:30-8pm in the House Office Buildings on Capitol Hill
    • Wednesdays: 4-5:15pm in U.S. Department of Education LBJ Building (ED staff only)
    • Wednesdays: 6:30-8pm Rising STARs program at St. Coletta of Greater Washington near RFK

Horton’s Kids provides tutors with:

  • A tutoring assignment based on your availability
    • Full-time: Regular weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions with the same student for a year
    • Floater: At least two sessions a month working with any child that needs a tutor
  • A grade-level assignment based on your comfort level (children range in age from Pre-K through 12th grade)
  • Individualized Learning Goals for each student based on their academic needs
  • Tutor trainings that cover strategies for academic success and useful behavior management skills
  • An extensive supply of books, interactive games, and teaching materials that support math and literacy education
  • Continuous communication from education staff to support you in your student’s goals

Tutors must:

  • Regularly attend weekly tutoring sessions
  • Attend all tutor trainings
  • Record and communicate information on your student’s progress
