Community Empowerment

tug-of-war

Horton’s Kids has worked in the children’s neighborhood since 1989 and has become an integral part of the community. Since most children stay in our programs for many years, Horton’s Kids develops friendships with their parents, who keep us aware of the children’s needs and community challenges. Every week, staff members visit families in the neighborhood to hear comments and concerns.

As older Horton’s Kids know, “once a Horton’s Kid, always a Horton’s Kid.” Former Horton’s Kids visit programs to share graduation stories, ask for advice on drafting resumes or seek help finding jobs. Our staff and volunteers are always happy to work with former Horton’s Kids and connect them with services.

In 2010, Horton’s Kids opened our Community Resource Center, which is located in a four-room apartment in the children’s neighborhood, to make connecting families with resources easier and more efficient. This center helps staff members be even more present in the neighborhood and helps us provide the children’s caregivers with additional support.

Horton’s Kids also becomes “a second family” to the wonderful volunteers, supporters, and staff who dedicate their time and resources to the children. The continued involvement of all stakeholders ensures that our comprehensive services will be available to the children for many years to come.
