Horton’s Kids provides academic programs that improve children’s reading and math skills and nurture their ability to succeed. Our staff members use results from academic assessments, school grade-level standards, and tutor feedback to create individualized education plans for every child. Volunteers use these plans to create effective and engaging tutoring activities.

Our thrice-weekly, one-on-one tutoring for children in grades pre-K through 12 is the cornerstone of Horton’s Kids’ programs. Tutoring takes place in Congressional Office Buildings and the U.S. Department of Education headquarters with hundreds of DC professionals who volunteer their time each week. Consistent, positive, individual attention from volunteers draws the children enthusiastically to the program.

During the summer, Horton’s Kids provides literacy programming to prevent the “summer slide” in the reading skills and to prepare children for the coming school year.

Horton’s Kids also works closely with parents and neighborhood schools to support the children. This educational advocacy includes helping interested families research alternatives to low-performing schools, complete applications to high-performing schools, and receive special education services for their children.
