Sign up below to thank and congratulate founder Karin Walser as Horton’s Kids marks its 25th anniversary.
Late one night in 1989, Karin, then a Congressional staffer, stopped at a gas station on New York Avenue, where several young children who lived in a nearby homeless shelter offered to pump her gas for spare change. Instead of just handing them money, she offered to take them to the zoo the following weekend. In the ensuing years, Karin enlisted friends to help the children and gave 20 years to Horton’s Kids – as founder, volunteer President, and its first employee. To this day, the children still affectionately call her Ms. Kern.
