About: Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization committed to driving positive change for over 600 children and families in Southeast DC by providing comprehensive academic, social-emotional, health, and wellness support. Our organization is deeply rooted in the communities we serve. We partner with communities in Southeast DC, where children and families with immense potential face the daily reality of historical disinvestment and systemic racism. Our approach involves working directly with families to access resources and services to overcome unjust obstacles and reach their full potential. Horton’s Kids operates three Community Resource Centers, each playing a vital role in our mission. At the heart of our operations is Horton’s Kids Community Resource Hub or “Horton’s Hub”, serving as our largest location and headquarters. This multifunctional space serves as both our administrative offices and the central hub for our programming and distribution efforts.
Job Description: Horton’s Kids is seeking a Manager of Academics to oversee academic programs for children. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of Youth Programs and coordinates with all youth programs staff. This position will play a crucial role in providing academic support for children. Additionally, they will support the organization’s broader goals for health and basic needs, youth development, social-emotional learning, enrichment, and community engagement. The salary range for this role is based on experience. This role requires an innovative and creative thinker who has a high aptitude for change.
Essential Responsibilities:
Academics:
- Oversee and organize literacy and math tutoring to ensure children meet grade-level standards.
- Train and support volunteer tutors, program assistants, and teachers in academic support.
- Assess children’s literacy and math levels using Renaissance Assessment, Do the Math, and other curricula.
- Monitor academic progress and compile quarterly snapshots.
- Provide diverse academic experiences in STEAM and other areas for children and their families.
School Advocacy:
- Develop and cultivate relationships with school administrators, teachers, and staff on behalf of children and families.
- Collaborate and support parents on their children’s educational rights. (i.e. IEP and parent teacher conference support)
- Advise families on school choice options and the lottery process; assist with the school enrollment and re-enrollment process.
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with school staff to ensure children receive the comprehensive education that they deserve.
Family Engagement:
- Communicate frequently with parents and families on participants academic progress; monitor participant’s attendance and participation in Horton’s Kids programs.
- Develop strong relationships within communities.
Administrative:
- Track, gather, and evaluate progress monitoring and report card data to monitor children’s academic growth.
- Manage and oversee part-time assistants during programs.
- Manage academic budget.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 years of classroom experience
- Familiarity with RTI Tiers, IEP/504 plans, and DC’s educational landscape
- Strong knowledge of FUNdations, Wilson, and Fountas & Pinnell
- Experience administering academic assessments and tailoring supports based on data.
- Proficient in behavior and classroom management using the tiered PBIS model.
- Experience in observing or coaching literacy instruction
- Ability to build strong relationships with children, families, volunteers, and school staff.
- Capable of managing long-term projects independently and collaboratively
- Experience with under-resourced, urban communities
- Committed to racial equity and social justice for children and families.
Salary: $65,000-$75,000, depending on experience.

Remote Work Opportunity: Currently, Horton’s Kids administrative staff work remotely two days per week. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays are mandatory days in the office at our facility at 2233 Hunter Place SE.
