Position Description

Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K – 12 living in two of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park and Stanton Oaks. In these neighborhoods, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. With support from committed staff and volunteers, Horton’s Kids’ goal is to change the life trajectory of children by providing academic, youth development, and health and basic needs supports.

Details: Horton’s Kids is seeking two Social Workers or Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) to provide behavioral support at our in-person Summer Camp for roughly 80 children in grades K-4. This position will play a crucial role in supporting students acclimate back into the school environment and mitigate learning loss due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  

After a year of distance learning, our Summer Camp’s goal is to prepare kids to return to school; our strategy is to provide academic and SEL opportunities in the morning and enrichment activities/field trips in the afternoon. We know that executive functioning and social skills are crucial to success. This position will support students in regulating their emotions and providing a safe space for children to process the stress of returning to in-person programs. 

Horton’s Kids Summer Camp is a 4-week program (June 28, 2021-July 23, 2021), Monday through Thursday from the hours of 8am-1pm. This year, we are operating out of the KIPP Douglass campus.  During the week of June 21, 2021, we will provide 20 paid hours of training. This is an in-person, hourly position; the pay rate is $40/hour. We will provide bonuses at the end of camp for staff who have perfect attendance. 

Due to COVID-19, appropriate and strict protocols will be put in place to ensure the safety of all students and staff. 

Core responsibilities of this position include: 

  • Oversee Mindfulness Room, a space used for 1-on-1 interventions to support students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs. 
  • Provide individual therapeutic support to students on an as-needed basis. 
  • Respond to crisis situations and implement behavior intervention plans. 
  • In conjunction with teachers and Horton’s Kids staff, support the development of curriculum to addresses the developmental needs of students. 
  • Implement appropriate accommodations and modifications to meet varying student need.  
  • Develop strong relationships with students.  
  • Ensure all COVID protocols and precautions are met.  
  • Recording and reporting behavioral data for bi-weekly progress reports.  
  • Supporting the development of trauma-informed practices.  
  • Ability to perform other duties as assigned.  

Qualifications:    

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, Behavior Analysis or Related Field. 
  • Currently have a social work or counselor license in Washington, D.C., or a license from another state and the required documentation to receive reciprocity in D.C. 
  • School-based social worker, psychologist, or behaviorist with 2+ years (Preferred) 
  • Ability and willingness to collaborate with others to support students. 
  • Ability to facilitate group interventions with students of varying needs.  
  • Can provide appropriate support and safety as applicable to camp guidelines.  
  • Experience working with children and families who come from under-resourced, urban backgrounds.  
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for children and families!
