Health and Wellness Coordinator
Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K – 12 living in two of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC – Wellington Park and Stanton Oaks. These communities are home to children and families with big dreams and the potential needed to achieve them. However, decades of disinvestment and systemic racism have created unfair barriers to access for these families. Horton’s Kids works to remove these barriers and even the playing field by providing comprehensive academic, social-emotional, health and wellness, and family engagement supports.
Health and Wellness Coordinator Overview: Horton’s Kids is seeking a full-time Health & Wellness Coordinator to join the Health & Wellness team. This position is responsible for developing and coordinating our health and wellness programming, outreach, and services for the children, youth and families of Stanton Oaks and Wellington Park. At Horton’s Kids we are driven to strengthen and help build a healthy community through education, community outreach, partnerships, and basic needs distributions. This position reports directly to the Director of Health & Wellness and works closely with the Community & Family Engagement team as well as other programmatic staff. The ideal candidate is collaborative, innovative, and organized, with excellent relationship building and community outreach skills.
Eligible candidates must be vaccinated and will be asked to provide a copy of their vaccination card.
Responsibilities:
Oversee Basic Needs Services

- Food Programs (After-school meals, Food Pantry, Weekend Bags, Fresh Produce Programs)
- Diaper Bank
- Toiletries
- Seasonal clothing (winter coats, gloves, hats, etc.)
- Acute dental, eye, and medical needs
- In-kind donations, working in close coordination with Development team
- Enhance current basic need website/ordering system to ensure families have access to what they need
Coordinate and Develop Health & Wellness Programming

- Design and implement research-based educational curriculum for children, older youth, parents/caregivers, and the larger community on areas of health and wellness (i.e., nutrition, physical activity, hygiene, asthma, sexual health, mindfulness, etc.)
- Develop and facilitate monthly parent and caregiver Wellness Workshops
- In coordination with the Community and Family Engagement Team, work to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental health and other wellness issues affecting under-resourced communities.
- Coordinate and expand healthy food choice programs that benefit the community (i.e., Healthier Generation, Weekend Bags, and Fresh Produce markets)

Track Data & Evaluation

- Ensure medical and emergency information for participants is up to date and staff are aware of pertinent and lifesaving medical information.
- Manages implementation of OSSE food reimbursement system, including upkeep of paperwork and applications
– Currently in conjunction with the Capital Area Food Bank’s Kids Café program
– Ensure all staff in contact with food distributions are trained appropriately and enforce health and safety guidelines - Track Basic Needs distributions from Community Resource Centers, using Salesforce. Create monthly, quarterly, and annual reports to showcase data and trends.
- Evaluate and track health, safety, and food security data.
Cultivate and Maintain Health & Wellness Partnerships that provide health services to the children adults, and the larger community.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in public health, social work, or related field
- Previous experience working in a community-based setting with children, youth, and/or adults.
- Experience with developing and facilitating health and wellness curriculum for children, youth, and/or adults
- Strong behavior management skills and understanding of child and youth development theory and practices
- Ability to connect with hard-to-reach youth and families
- Experience working with children and families who comes from systemically marginalized communities
- Flexibility: must thrive in fast-paced environment and can work evenings and weekend days as needed
- Driven to innovate and collaborate within a team setting
- Organized and able to manage multiple systems to track data and distributions
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and experience with Salesforce is a plus
- Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for youth and families
Salary: $40,000 – $45,000
