ABOUT BILLY BASH:
In January 2011, Billy Mitchell’s life was cut short. (See Billy’s Story below.)

In 2013, when we hosted our first Billy Bash, the party was an attempt to ease our pain, surround ourselves with people that loved Billy, and do some good for others. You all showed up in full force that year and in all the years that followed. We are so thankful for your love, support and willingness to travel from all over the country to join us in celebrating life, Billy, and helping Horton’s Kids.

HORTON’S KIDS:
Supporting children in Southeast DC is at the heart of Horton’s Kids mission. Their holistic approach centers on partnership: connecting with the child, their family, school, and community – to ensure they graduate from high school ready for success in college, career, and life. Horton’s Kids understands that there is no “one size fits all” solution. Our approach is multi-faceted and intersects through four reinforcing strands of service: academics, youth development, health and wellness, and family engagement.

BILLY’S STORY:
For those of you who don’t know the story, here it is. In January 2011, our brother/son/cousin/uncle/nephew/friend Billy Mitchell tragically lost his life. After a night at the theater with his mother, Billy was walking home from the METRO in DC, and was shot and killed attempting to help a woman who was being harassed. The police (thanks mostly to the dedication of Detective Charles Fultz, Detective Smith, and their colleagues) connected the killer to this murder a year later. He was already in jail for a carjacking that he committed just hours before the murder. He was ultimately convicted of both crimes and was sentenced to a total of 38 years in prison.

To honor Billy’s legacy, Billy Bash benefits Horton’s Kids, an organization that Billy had been a volunteer and supporter of, whose mission is to fight educational and racial disparities in DC. To learn more about Horton’s Kids and their programs, click here.
