Horton’s Kids was founded in 1989 when Karin Walser, then a Capitol Hill staffer, stopped to get gas. Several children who lived in a nearby homeless shelter approached her and offered to pump her gas for spare change. Instead of handing them money, she offered to take them to the zoo the next weekend.

In the ensuing weeks and months, Karin enlisted friends to join her in taking the children out on weekend field trips and afterschool tutoring. This group of friends grew into a network of hundreds of volunteers, and for the first 12 years of Horton’s Kids’ history, the organization was entirely volunteer-run.

Today, Horton’s Kids work is made possible by hundreds of committed volunteers who tutor, mentor, chaperone field trips, and more. They are the organization’s backbone. The Karin Walser Commitment to Service Award honors volunteers who embody one of Horton’s Kids’ founding principles: dedicated volunteer service can change a child’s life.

Fairmont Washington D.C. Georgetown

Since selecting Horton’s Kids as their charity partner in 2018, The Fairmont Washington D.C. Georgetown has gone above and beyond in supporting the organization. Amanda Choutka

Amanda Choutka has consistently partnered with Horton’s Kids since 2005 in different capacities: intern, Development staff, Summer Camp staff, and volunteer on Tuesday nights. While she was earning a M.F.A. in Creative Writing at American University, she started teaching first-year writing courses and discovered “service-learning,” a pedagogy that blends academic instruction, social justice, and direct service in the community. Amanda and her students have partnered with Horton’s Kids since 2011, and she now teaches 3 community-based learning courses each year that partner with Horton’s Kids. Her courses prepare first-year students to volunteer with an antiracist and racial justice framework as they learn about the complex problems of systemic and institutional racism the families of Horton’s Kids experience daily. Amanda’s perspective has shifted over 17 years to challenge her students – and volunteers – to move beyond good intentions, and instead think and act based on community-defined needs that contribute to racial justice and equity. Thank you Amanda for your commitment to leadership and justice both in and out of the classroom – and for your extensive service to Horton’s Kids over the years.
