About Horton’s Kids: Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 600+ K-12 grade students and families living in two of the most under-resourced communities in Southeast Washington, DC – Wellington Park and Stanton Oaks. These communities are home to children and families with big dreams and the potential needed to achieve them. However, decades of disinvestment and systemic racism have created unfair barriers to access for these families.
Horton’s Kids works to remove these barriers and even the playing field by providing comprehensive academic, social-emotional, health and wellness, and family engagement supports.
Position Description: The Horton’s Kids Development and Communications Coordinator position is an exciting growth role for an early career professional who wants to develop their fundraising and communications skills at a dynamic, community-based nonprofit. This cross-cutting position will provide opportunities to work with and learn from seasoned development and communication professionals.
For the right candidate, there will be ample opportunities to put your stamp on donor stewardship efforts, events, appeals, and more, in addition to getting in-depth experience with the organization’s donor database, Raiser’s Edge. The candidate will receive training and ongoing support from the former coordinator who is now the Corporate Partnerships Manager.
Gift Processing and Database Administration (25%)
- In Raiser’s Edge, assist with end-to-end activities associated with gift processing for all income received by Horton’s Kids:
- Accurate gift entry and timely acknowledgment for all gifts received
- Pull monthly income reports and work to reconcile financial data with the finance
- Maintain the integrity of donor records with consistent and accurate
- Collect monthly reports of in-kind donations received by other staff members and process as
- Stay up-to-date with Raiser’s Edge and Raiser’s Edge NXT capabilities and ensure that Horton’s Kids uses the database software’s full capabilities.
Individual Giving Support (20%)
- Provide the Senior Director of Individual Giving with weekly donor reports for additional donor
- Increase engagement with recurring monthly donors by implementing a Recurring Monthly Donor program.
- Own pieces of the Donor Stewardship Matrix to provide all Horton’s Kids individual donors with a positive donor experience.
- Support Senior Director of Individual Giving with direct mail program (drafting content, creating story pitches, updating donor records with new addresses, assisting with donor mailing lists, )
Communications Support (25%)
With assistance from the Director of Communications and Events:
- Lead the management and engagement of the organization’s social media channels and build a robust content pipeline.
- Produce copy and design for email campaigns, website, event promotions, marketing assets, and other collateral, as needed.
- Support the Communications Director with the management and maintenance of Horton’s Kids website.
Event Support (10%)
- Assist with the execution of benefits fulfillment and donation processing for two largest fundraising events- Home Runs for Horton’s Kids and Give Thanks & Give Back.
- Assist Corporate Partnership Manager with curating the auction for Give Thanks & Give
- Assist Corporate Partnership Manager with submitting Home Runs for Horton’s Kids funding proposals as needed.
Corporate Giving Support (5%)
With assistance from Corporate Partnerships Manager and Senior Director of Individual Giving oversee Horton’s Kids involvement in various workplace giving programs (CFC, World Bank, IMF, etc):

- Complete applications to participate in workplace giving
- Attend events and send messages to employees during
In-Kind Giving Support (10%)
With Assistance from Corporate Partnerships Manager:
- Design and implement collateral and e-campaign strategies for in-kind
- Represent Horton’s Kids at on-site In-Kind Creation
- Receive, inventory, and report in-kind
Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Essential Qualifications:
- Strong attention to detail. Strong writing skills.
- Interest in learning and administering a donor database (Raiser’s Edge preferred. Training will be provided).
- Experience developing content for social media, producing copy and design, and/or interpreting engagement analytics.
Salary: $50,000 to $55,000 based on experience.
