Horton’s Kids is a community-based organization working to drive positive change in the lives of 500 children in grades K – 12 living in one of the most under-resourced communities in southeast Washington, DC, called Wellington Park. In this neighborhood, 80 percent of adults do not have a high school diploma, and the average annual household income is less than $10,000. Position: Youth Programs Intern
We are seeking a highly-motivated person to serve in our Capitol Hill office as a Programs Intern. Our Programs Internship at Horton’s Kids will support the Deputy Director who oversees all program functions. It would be a great fit for someone looking to learn more about nonprofit programs, program evaluation, outcomes tracking and program alignment. Program areas the intern will work on include our Education programs (tutoring, homework help, educational advocacy), Youth Development programs (case management, special events, enrichment and social-emotional development) , Health & Basic Needs (food, mental health, physical health, community outreach).
The Deputy serves a critical role at the intersection of all programs and the intern will play an important role in assisting the Deputy with program alignment, program evaluation and outcomes tracking.
Skills/Experience Needed:
- Program Evaluation experience a plus
- Youth Development or Education experience a plus
- Proficient in Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Out-going, personable, and enthusiastic.
- Flexible to schedule changes and last minute assignments.
- Highly organized and dependable.
- Willing to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Reliable transportation is a plus to go to and from the Community Resource Center (separate location than the main office).
- Experience in an inner-city setting is a plus and a passion for serving children and youth from under-resourced communities.
This is an unpaid internship, but all interns whose internships are not funded by school or other grants receive a monthly $100 transportation stipend to defray commuting costs.
Horton’s Kids staff works in a metro-accessible office located on Capitol Hill as well as Community Resource Center in Anacostia. Interns may be asked to work some evening hours, do some lifting, or assist at Horton’s Kids academic programs.

Position: Fundraising & Communications Intern
We are seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented student with strong communication and writing skills. This position is a great fit for students who are interested in a nonprofit career and want to learn more about how nonprofits raise funds and communicate with their supporters or for Communications, Business, Marketing or English majors. Interns will work directly with our development (fundraising) team and have access to a variety of projects.
Responsibilities depend on experience, skills, interest, and schedule, but may include:
Donor and Foundation Relations Support
– Soliciting in-kind donations from local businesses
– Helping with a year-end, direct mail appeal
– Planning and executing our summer event, Home Runs for Horton’s Kids
– Planning and executing our fall event, Give Thanks & Give Back
– Implementing components of the strategic upgrading of Horton’s Kids’ donor database
– Representing Horton’s Kids at charity fairs
– Preparing for fundraising events, including outreach, silent auction, logistics, managing RSVPs, and creating collateral
– Researching potential grants and individual donors
– Drafting applications for grants and charity events
Communications
– Developing social media copy
– Interviewing staff and the children in our programs for features in e-newsletters and social media
– Copyediting donor materials
Essential Experience and Competencies:
– Excellent writing and editing skills – your submission will not be considered if there are grammar or spelling mistakes
– Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences
– Ability to multitask under pressure and to meet deadlines
– Ability to work independently and think creatively
– Attention to detail
– Strong organizational skills
– Enthusiasm for our mission
– Flexibility with changing situations
– Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (InDesign is a plus but not required.)
– Background in website maintenance and graphic design is a plus but not required
